School Dance scheduld for Friday, February 27 has been rescheduled to Friday, March 6.
Picture Day for Track 3 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 11.
The Spring 2015 Scholastic Book Fair is this week with Family Night on Thursday from 6:30-8:30. We hope everyone will stop by at some point this week. On Friday, March 6th, we will have our dance from 6:30 to 9:00 that was originally scheduled for this past Friday. The Book Fair will be open that night as well but just for parents.
Supervising Book Fair (March 2-13th) 7am-2:40pm (usually in 2 hour blocks).... help student shoppers, assist with check out, and keep Book Fair tidy. Also need help on Family Night, March 5th.
Packing up (March 13) 2:40-4pm... help pack up the Book Fair and put the library back to normal
Updated Make-Up Schedule
Due to the prolonged effects of last week's winter weather, the Wake County Public School System will use the following schedule to make up the academic time lost from Feb. 17 through Feb. 20. No additional make-up time will be required.
Year-Round, Tracks 1 and 3: One make-up day will be taken by extending the early release days scheduled for March 6 and April 17 to full school days. The year-round make-up day originally scheduled for Feb. 28 has been canceled.
Year-Round, Track 4: The March 6 early release day will be extended to a full day. The year-round make-up day originally scheduled for Feb. 28 has been canceled.
Year-Round, Track 2: Track 2 was not in session during the weather closures. However, Track 2 will be in session on April 17 and will now be in school for a full day. Due to transportation constraints, it is not possible to run some schools/some tracks on an early release schedule, while other schools are on a full-day schedule.
We were able to avoid additional make-up days by using the hours that students already are scheduled to attend above the state's required minimum of 1,025 hours.
Boys Soccer, Girls Softball and Track Tryouts will take place this coming week, beginning on Monday, February 23rd.
West Lake Testing
Proctors needed for ACCESS, EOG, EOC and North Carolina Final Exams. ACCESS is Feb 9-March 13 for all tracks. The end of year testing which includes EOG, EOC, and NCFE are listed below by track.
- Track 1 May 15- May 21
- Tracks 2, 3, and 4 June 15- June 19
If you are interested in proctoring for any or all of these tests, please contact Carron Carter (919) 662-2900 or via email.
Who can proctor? Any WCPSS employee or volunteer who has successfully completed the volunteer application process and is 18 or over can proctor. You can complete the volunteer application at any WCPSS on Mondays - be sure to add West Lake to the list of schools where you are willing to volunteer. Proctors must attend a test administration training session and agree to fulfill the duties described to assure ethical and fair test administration. The only restriction is that you can't proctor on your child's grade and track.
Please contact Carron Carter if you can help us with our testing.

SMART stands for "Students Maximizing Academic Resources through Technology." The SMART Academy offers year-round programs for academic development. The foundation of CIS Wake's SMART Academy is the SMART Weekend School, a rigorous 24-week program designed to strengthen students in grades K through 10 in math and reading. Beginning September 20, 2014, SMART Weekend will meet on Saturdays or Sundays for three hours each session for intensive instruction. Parents will choose one day per weekend for their student(s). Led by certified teachers, scientists and researchers, instruction emphasizes:
- Project-based learning
- Interactive instruction
- Small group instruction
West Lake Middle School counselors will offer tours of our school for prospective students and parents on the following dates and times. We look forward to providing information about our school and to give prospective families a glimpse of the wonderful learning opportunities we offer. Also, the two new student orientation/registration nights will be held in March or April on dates to be determined. We are unable to provide private tours at other times so we encourage interested families to plan to attend one of these scheduled tours or orientation nights.
All tours will begin at 9:00am (unless noted) in the front lobby of the school and will last approximately one hour. No registration is required.

Our school is educating students and parents about digital safety. We have a simple message borrowed from the Institute for Responsible Online and Cell Phone Communications -- Everything you do with your digital device is Public and Permanent. If we approach all use of digital devices with this digital consciousness, we will keep ourselves and our children safe. Please check out our Digital Safety page.
Earning Credit by Demonstrated Mastery
Under the state's new Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) option, uniquely qualified students may 'test out' or bypass a course if they have already mastered the content.
The program provides another opportunity for students to learn new content, to challenge themselves with the next level of rigor in a subject, and even graduate early. This option is not designed to replace existing accelerated pathways, such as the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program at WCPSS.
School Bus Information
This is a message from the Wake County Public School System for families at year-round schools who ride the bus.
Your student's school bus may serve both year round and traditional calendar schools.
You may notice your bus arrives a little later once traditional calendar schools open on Monday, August 25th.
We want you to know that arrival times will improve as traditional calendar school families become familiar with new routines. Please know that our ridership grows dramatically with the start of the traditional calendar schools and the steps we put in place this year are geared to improve efficiency and increase on-time delivery of students to school and home.
We provide Live Bus Updates online at www.wcpss.net/transportation. Choose your school to see news for your bus.
Thanks for your support of the Wake County Public School System.
Dress Code/Electronics Policy
West Lake has a set of dress guidelines and we also follow the guidelines of WCPSS Board Policy number 1-5 which states "students are expected to adhere to standards of dress and appearance that are compatible with an effective learning environment. Presenting a bodily appearance or wearing clothing which is disruptive, provocative, revealing, profane, vulgar, offensive or obscene, or which endangers the health or safety of the student or others is prohibited."
Student Accident Insurance
As a result of the low participation in our voluntary student accident insurance (less that 2% of student participation), enrollment forms will no longer be provided to each school for distribution. Please be advised that you can enroll your child effective July 1, 2014 in this Voluntary Student Accident Insurance coverage by completing the application and mailing your application and check to Bollinger for processing coverage. Your coverage will be effective the date you sign the application.
Effective August 1, 2014 you can enroll your child online at www.BollingerSchools.com. Student Accident Insurance options available for the 2014-15 school year include:
- School Time Only (includes all sports except football)
- 24 hour Only (includes all sports except football)

Home Base Parent Portal
The Home Base Parent Portal is your way to make sure you can keep up with how your child is doing in school. You can see grades, missed assignments, etc. You can come to the school to sign up. Please make sure to bring your photo ID. Our office hours are from 7 AM to 3:30 PM. If a student has parents who do not live at the same address, the pass code will be given to the parent whose address matches that of the student.
If you have not yet submitted the form for getting a HomeBase login, please choose an option below:
- If you can come to the school to present a photo ID, choose this form.
- If you cannot come to the school, you will need to have this form notarized and sent in with your child.
This process has had some issues, so if you are not able to log in, there will be instructions on the Home Base page that will tell you who to contact. These issues cannot be corrected at the school.
